Official LEGO wolf, now built weirder.
PROLOGUE
About a month or so ago, LEGO teased us with the upcoming LEGO sets for the second half of this year (2026). And set 31393: Gray Wolf captivated me! The parts count of almost 700 pieces and also the color scheme did the trick! There's one official lion set as well but I already have quite a few sets with flesh-toned color schemes... I shall give it a pass at the moment.
Prior to getting this set.... my initial plan was to build a Transformer using it ,with simple alternate modes... like a space cruiser. I've made a ton of Transformers space cruisers before using variety of LEGO sets big and small.
BUT FATE HAS OTHER PLANS....
Upon getting the set above and unboxed it to build the bird and then the wolf model...... something hit me: Then I thought "Hey...I can preserve* the wolf head and build a wolf Transformer" . And Weirdwolf came to mind!
*I ended up modding the official wolf head to adapt to the transformation requirements of my project.
ABOUT WEIRDWOLF
There's just a handful of non-iconic "usual suspects" official Transformers character that formed my childhood memory. Weirdwolf is one of them. Keep reading to find out why.
When I was about 14, I made my first trip with friends to the big city. I lived in the suburbs at that time so this trip was a huge deal. We took the bus to one of the few big malls in the city and naturally ... we browsed the toy section.
I ended up buying my first official Transformer ... it was literally a Horri-bull deal! Before this, all my Transformers toye were bootlegs bought from the local market. and some of them were in Diaclone colors too.
And one of my friend, with a fatter wallet than me... spent a few bucks more to buy... Weirdwolf! So there.
ABOUT PROJECT LEGO WEIRDWOLF
I will try my best to make sure the very first Transformer I made using any official LEGO set to have FREE building tutorial. So choosing a wolf mode/Weirdwolf hopefully is a refreshing choice compared to boring space cruisers.
Note the raised vents on the front legs, mimicing the actual official Weirdwolf
The front legs are quite weak so this creation is a sculpture in wolf mode, with little poseability. I'll make it up with a super articulated robot mode though.
With gun mounted
TRANSFORM!
ROBOT MODE
Always fun to add finishing touches to the robot mode... like the four nipples at the corners of his chest, for example. Aside from his short legs... I consider this to be one of my tour-de-force creation made using official LEGO sets.
I initially designed the feet to be hinged and be folded in wolf mode. But these feet tend to pop off due to weak connections . Frustrated, I redesign the feet to be fixed in place instead.
MORE ACTION POSES
I actually have forgotten to factor in the articulation when building the raised vents on his animal front legs. Luckily they doesn't hamper the range of shoulder joints excessively.
With gun.
He has weak elbows so certain gun-totting poses might be limited, especially when its pointed forward.
Just like the original Weirdwolf toy, the tail detaches to become the sword. I must admit the sword holding method is very weird. As if he's holding a piece of wooden plant.
The original Weirdwolf toy has thinner tail-sword. I did try to replicate that but failed still. So mine here is pretty chunky.
