It's time to terrorize....!!!
PROLOGUE
In the early 2000s , my return to Transformers as an adult started with collecting Beast Wars toys. The show had ended at that point but the toys were still sold at the stores. And I snagged whatever BW toys that I found, even Japanese versions (BW Neo) and then Cryotek from RID cartoon (below).
A year or so later, I discovered beast-like Transformers was not my cup of tea after all , so I sold most of them . That was the time where a new Transformers series (Armada) arrived to capture my attention.
ABOUT DRAGON
Last year (2024) was the Year of the Dragon in Chinese Zodiac. To commemorate it, I planned to build a dragon Transformer but forgotten about this plan until the very end of the year. I did built and published a Dragon Transformer on December 2024 (below) to make up to this, but it was not the dragon I had in mind, but something resembling Cryotek instead.
ABOUT SET 31150
LEGO set 31150 was released last year and upon purchase and building my Transformers using this set, I came to a realization that the set is most suitable for Transformer with beast alternate modes, due to the flesh-colored parts.
Prior to this project, Dinobot Swoop was made using this set.
ABOUT THIS PROJECT
This project was started to fulfil my last year's Dragon TF plan, obviously. And since Cryotek and Beast Wars Megatron shared the same mould, I'd think I prefer to name this project as the latter instead due to Megatron being a more popular/prominent figure, with closer color scheme to boot (reddish)
The tail used to be blunt until I performed due-diligence of checking my creation against actual photos of BW Megatron once more, only to discover that I've forgotten to make the tail spiky!
Then I spent 15 minutes more to try conjure a spiky tail with some LEGO pieces, but failed! (too chunky). I ended up using just one piece , a flower stalk and called it a day!
Dragon head was built quite early in this project, with curvy muzzle. Before wrapping this project up, I decided to improve it, and apply heart-shaped tiles instead to make it look nastier and "nosey".
The rounded "wheel-like" design on his dragon leg paid homage to the 3rd mode (weird looking land vehicle) in the original BW Dragon Megatron toy more than 20 years ago. The most recent reimagining of him doesn't have this mode, and so mine shoudn't too (read: I'm lazy to implement it).
Wings were the last component to be built after I am truly satisfied with the rest of the body. With limited parts left , it showed how splotchy the overall wings looked.
With Beast Wars Optimus Primal made using Jungle Dragon set!
TRANSFORM uhmmm....TERRORIZE!!
Triple hinged knee joints allowed the stumpy dragon legs be straightened to become long robot legs.
One of the more satisfying achievements was able to get the dragon neck to peg onto the body via one stud. Without such connection, the long neck have a tendency to collapse to the right when the dragon is not upright enough.
ROBOT MODE
This project broke my assumptions! During planning period, I thought the hardest part would be arms transformation, especially the one that is NOT the dragon head (how should I conceal this arm in dragon mode?). Viewing video reviews of recent BW Megatron toy worsened my worries!
And when I finally started building, things weren't so bad after all!
And when I finally started building, things weren't so bad after all!
At the very get go, I actually disliked original Megatron's head design with beast tail on it, coz it hindered his head articulations. But I succumbed to following the design anyway after failing to find a better way to hide his head in beast mode.
If you follow my Instagram, you'll get to see work in progress of my projects. For this one, the feet is particularly challenging and my IG contains a post of its previous design which I was not satisfied.
MORE ACTION POSES
He's a sexy beast, and a flexy bot!
With his counterpart from Bay-verse.
