Video Tutorial: Transformer Hovercar using LEGO Creator 31163: Playful Cat!

Introducing.... my first Transformer built using a LEGO set from 2025!!!

PROLOGUE

As the year 2025, descended... I made my annual pilgrimage to get a few new LEGO sets to qualify for the "year of the Snake" gift with purchase.  And set 31163 was one of them, together with the Creator Dragon, too!

I was pretty excited to unbox the Dragon set first initially (and charge for the building instructions), but since this is a brand new set for a brand new year, I supposed I should build something and offer instructions for free as a start. So set 31163 was brought to the forefront .

ABOUT SET 31163

This set reminded me so much of one LEGO Creator set that was released back in 2014 (below), due to very obvious reason.

I actually built a Transformer using set 31021 too (video below), and this creation won a competition in rebrickable.com back then

ABOUT PROJECT HOVERCAR

Well, this project started life with aim to build a space cruiser Transformer.  Space cruiser has always been a pretty simple mode to build  using LEGO sets, I'd thought.

But after a day of "toiling", I simply can't get my groove. So I tried other alternate modes instead.   So there!

Initially the hovercar I had in mind was something like Arcee, a vehicle without hood. But an eureka moment arrived in the form of yellow curved parts that's just perfect to mimic the windshield!

The turret was not just solely for aesthetic purpose.

Even though from the outside, the car hood design is pretty straightforward and simple. But actually there are some pretty clever techniques I applied into realising this design.

TRANSFORM!

Unfold the legs from the rear of vehicle. Noticed how the turret piece is actually a gun that helps to connect both the legs together in vehicle mode.

ROBOT MODE

The most challenging part is definitely  designing his hands.  The best part  to be used for knuckles should be rounded, and also with holes on top, rather than studs .  Achieving this took me hours of attempts!

The best thing about the LEGO set used for this creation is how effortless a decent, articulated  head can be conjured from available parts, despite its regular parts count. I always faced challenges building robot heads using regular LEGO sets but not this one.

Opps...  I've forgotten to put the gun instructions in my video. Refer to below instead!
