Video Tutorial: Transformer Excavator from LEGO Creator set 31088: Deep Sea Creatures

This project was made possible from an eureka moment (again!).

Before you proceed, you might be interested to see my recent LEGO Creator/Bumblebee  alternate builds, mostly transformers (link below)

This Transformer was built using parts from LEGO 31088: Deep Sea Creatures. And it's my 4th Transformers created from the set. ( click here to view the previous 3 )

Those 3 earlier Transformers had futuristic-looking alternate modes, and I noticed the claw parts were underutilized there.

One fine day about 3 months ago, I had a revelation that those claw parts actually looked like tank treads from certain angles.  But I decided not to build a tank TF because there's no suitable rounded parts from the set to be used as cannon barrels.

EXCAVATOR MODE

90% of this creation was completed in 2 weeks. I spent even more time refining the body of the vehicle and make them as smooth as possible with no protruding studs, especially on the side.

The boom can be extended but certain position might caused the body to tip forward. The solution (which I didn't implement) would be adding more counterweights to the back of the vehicle body.

It's rotatable but at a cost of tilted vehicle body.

TRANSFORM!

Note the red pillars aligning the tracks turned arms together in vehicle mode. One of the final improvement  before I release this creation into the wild.

Red pillars folded inwards to form the waist.

The stud as pointed by the arrow above  helps to peg the boom mechanism to the back of the robot mode.

ROBOT MODE

The presence of the flaps on his  heels help to stabilize him in poses that require knee bending.
